Put Everyone Out

Rumi’s ghazal translated by Fatima Haidari with David Keplinger

Pick a fight, because fighting with the virtuous is fun.
Come up with excuses. It is a tradition amongst the pretty-faces.

I won’t desire loyalty since the treachery of good people
is natural, ingrained, part of their habit and conviction.

Make a thousand promises, then break them all.
This is the mirage worth a hundred bodies of fresh water.

Put everyone out, in their place, like the dogs
since your mountaintop is worthy only of Sinai’s.

Kings receive the beatings of the khalifa to become a king.
Bearing love’s cruelty is the art of sultans.
