Rumi’s ghazal translated by Fatima Haidari with David Keplinger

Last night, my beloved set upon my head a golden crown.
Go on and slap me: it won’t fall off my head.
Here is my head and this heavy bludgeon. Hit me, give it a try.
If the skull breaks, you’ll see I’m more than this body and brain.
A walnut with no brain prefers the thickest shell.
Because it has not yet seen my prophet’s almond.
Once you find substance, O son, you will take your eyes off the shell.
Once you arrive in the city of Jesus, you won’t ask
“What happened to my donkey?”
